5 Autumnal Nail Trends You Need To Try

Following nail trends is a quick way to update your look to match the seasons without spending a load of cash. Here are some of our top picks.

The A/W fashion shows dictate everything we see in clothes, accessories and makeup throughout the next season. In the summer gingham dominated the high street. Whether it was a dress, blouse or eye-catching trench coat, everyone wanted a piece of this print. This season is no different for setting a strong trend, and it’s not only the clothes that were making a statement on the runways. Nails are just another canvas on which to make your mark. With that said, we’re taking a look at the autumnal nail trends that you need to get behind.

Barely there nail trends

Less is always more, and this was very much the mindset at Mugler, Mary Katrantzou and Emilia Wickstead. Her nails were neatly groomed before being painted with a pale pink or in a subtle French manicure style.

Take this look to the next level by incorporating the trend for a semi-shine. Simply skip the top coat for a partial sheen that won’t betray any accidental chips.

However, if you want a look that will stand out, then a frosted top coat should up the style stakes in your manicure. For extra points add some white glitter to the very tips of your fingertips.

Logo power

All summer we saw slogan tees splashed across our social media and the trend for pasting words and letters across our clothes and accessories doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Applying a logo to a plain nail base is sure to get some attention, just as Balenciaga did with their ‘BB’ logos.

Dark and smoky

It wouldn’t be the A/W fashion season without someone re-introducing dark shades into our lives. This season the focus will be on deeper shades that just veer into making you look edgy. Think of dark colours such as rich aubergines and jewel-like blues and greens. Lighten this up with smoky neutral shades such as lilac greys and dusty creams or opt for the always favoured deep red.

These tones are sure to draw attention to your fingertips, but there’s no need to stop there. Mulberry included dark metallic nails in their A/W looks, and we’ll be following suit. Simply choose a dark metallic tone in any of the above shades, use a good base coat and voila; a maximum impact manicure.

Sunset shades

In direct contrast to these darker tones is the trend for bright oranges and reds seen on the catwalk at Jeremy Scott and Paul Costelloe. Winter wardrobes usually include darker shades and neutrals. To counteract this, these nail shades are stealing the show and standing out against our usual winter palettes of black, grey and cream. If you fancy bringing a bit of brightness to those dark winter days then this trend might be just the thing you’ve been looking for.

Dark florals

We’re a nation that loves our floral-patterned things, from summery tea dresses to jewellery, bags and shoes that all incorporate a little bit of natural inspiration. Our florals simply change in shades throughout the seasons, switching from light and bright colours to ones at a darker end of the spectrum.

Vintage florals were shown off at quite a few catwalks, including Novis. The Novis collection was apparently inspired by a vintage floral coach so it’s no surprise that dark florals made an impact!

Cuticle art

Last but not least, nail art is still very much in fashion. However, this time it’s had a slight twist in that designs are now painted in some way over the cuticle or around it. Using nail paint, nail pens, washi tape or specifically made cuticle stickers you can get in on this trend too. At the Julien MacDonald show models wore nude nail polish that was surrounded by a thin line of silver around the nail. More recently the trend has seen an update in cuticle tattoos, though it’s up to you if you want to try something as permanent as this! For some more temporary inspiration see here for a few ways that you can try the trend yourself.

There are plenty of colours and nail trends that we’ll be trying out here at Gorgeous Shop HQ. Now, who’s got the steadiest hands to do this floral nail art?
