Why Beauty Sleep Means Balanced Skin

We all crave a bit of balance in our lives don’t we? Whether it’s in our diets, our work-home life, our mind-set or with our skin, keeping everything regulated is key to a balanced life overall. Sounds lovely doesn’t it? But as with most things, the good stuff doesn’t just fall into our laps (oh, imagine!). And especially not when it comes to having a great complexion. After all, there is work to be done to achieve such greatness, and it starts with a good night’s sleep. Well, they don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing…

As well as drinking plenty of water, eating your five a day and carrying out a consistent morning and evening skincare regime, well-rested skin is one of the main answers to your smooth skin-prayers. But what does sleeping have to do with your skin?
Think about what your skin goes through during the day. From daily aggressors like stress, fluctuating temperature changes and pollution, to irritation, wearing makeup and thick sun cream, your skin takes hit after hit and needs time to heal and reset.

When you go into a deep sleep, your body produces growth hormones which create new cells to help regenerate the skin.

If you’re regularly sleeping for less than six hours a night, your skin won’t be able to catch-up and it’ll start to act-up instead. Cue: enlarged pores, dark circles, excess oil, a rough texture, imperfections and zero glow.

Nope, not today thank you.

So here are our tips for maintaining good sleep whilst reaping the skincare benefits:

1. Keep your bedroom cool and dark. The last thing your mind needs is to be kept stimulated by little red lights or poorly covered windows. Invest in some blackout curtains if you can and cover up any appliance lights that might be affecting your sleep state. Open your window a crack, even in the winter; the cool air will make both your bedroom and brain less stuffy and you can always treat yourself to a new blanket if you’re cold. (Hey, we’re all about the self-care…!)

2. Comfort, relax and rebalance the mind, body and soul before bed with Balance Me’s Balance Being Oil. Alleviate feelings of stress and anxiety and calm your emotions with this beautifully scented oil – suitable for massage, bath, vaporisation and inhalation.

3. Change your bedding once a week. You’d be surprised at how quickly bacteria can build up on your pillowcase and cause breakouts, but we’ll spare you the gory details. Having clean bedding also helps you get into a calm, relaxed mind-set, ready for a dreamy night’s sleep.

4. Spritz a little calm onto your skin. Balance Me Beauty Sleep Hyaluronic Mist is packed full of gorgeous sleep-supporting ingredients. Mist some onto your face just before bedtime and enjoy hydrated skin with a side of great sleep.

5. Give your skin a treat. Apply Balance Me Bakuchiol Smoothing Serum to your cleansed face and neck just before bed, and let it sink in and work overnight by reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and a dull complexion.

6. Put down your phone 30 minutes before bedtime. Whether you’re scrolling through your feeds, checking your emails or messaging a friend, your phone will keep your brain stimulated for longer than necessary and it will take longer to fall into a deep sleep. You don’t need to know the details of tomorrow’s meeting. That’s tomorrow’s problem. It’s time to switch it off, and switch off. Sweet dreams…
