The Truth About Stepping Up Your Factor

Think stepping up your factor will block your tan? Think again. The experts at Ultrasun are here to shed some (sun)light on the truth behind upping your factor.

Does high factor suncream have you reminiscing about a childhood of summers in thick and chalky formulas? Think that a high factor suncream is your tan’s worst enemy? Think again, Ultrasun are here to explain why upping your factor needn’t mean banishing your tan.

You Can Still Tan Using a High Factor

Although using a higher factor may mean that (depending on your skin) it will take a little longer to tan, it a myth that using a high factor will prevent the tanning process. Ultrasun is a filter not a block, so you can still get your glow on! Fast tanning through using little to no sun protection causes the skin to go into trauma. This results in either a short lived tan, or burning – for a long-lasting colour it is much better to tan gradually which will avoid the skin going into shock and shedding the damage cells.

Abi Cleeve, MD Ultrasun UK comments, “The biggest myth is that you have to go red before you go brown. The truth is, by protecting properly from the sun, the tan that you get will last. We want to help and encourage them to spend shorter spells with regular shade breaks.” She added “We have so much feedback from our customers that once they started using higher protection, they saw a deeper, longer lasting tan and adopted safer sun habits. We believe in encouragement and education rather than scare tactics or lecturing, focusing instead on innovative products that gradually change behaviour.”

High Factors Aren’t Always Thick and Chalky

All Ultrasun products are non-comedogenic. This means that the formula will not sit on the skin and block pores, which is the trigger for prickly heat and other sun allergies. Ultrasun products are also designed to be skin compatible through a mixture of the patented lamellar technology and ingredients. They absorb quickly and easily beneath the skin for long lasting protection – making the perfect primer for makeup! We are always improving our formulas to ensure that we are at the forefront of high protection sun cream that your skin will love.

It Helps Your Skin Cope with the Strength of the Sun

Going straight into the sun with a low factor can be a shock to the skin, as it takes the skin awhile to adjust. Under the influence of UV rays, the skin begins to thicken and starts producing melanin. These processes take 10-20 days to take place, so use extra protection while your skin is adjusting to the sun. After the skin has had enough time to adjust, then you can step down your level of SPF if you wish.
