Introducing the organic brand's ultimate guide to treating maskne, with expert tips, spot-fighting formulas and much more.

Got your keys? Phone? Lipstick? Face mask? Fabric face masks were one thing we never anticipated adding to the mental checklist we do before we leave the house, but these fabric face protectors continue to be a necessity for trips to the supermarket, salon and workplace.

Wearing a fabric face mask is the responsible thing to do, but frequent face mask use has been linked to a form of acne dubbed ‘maskne’.

#TeamGorgeous and Green People reveal simple skin-care switches that can help you to keep your skin clear of maskne.

What is Maskne?

The medical term for maskne is Acne Mechanica and this typically develops as a result of fabrics rubbing against the skin. Maskne often appears around the jaw and forehead because your face mask or face shield has trapped heat into the skin, helping bad bacteria to reproduce.

Following a natural spot-fighting skin-care routine can help to protect your skin from maskne breakouts. It is also important to wash your face mask regularly and keep hands clean when handling your face mask. Failing to do this could mean that your face mask becomes a bacteria-breeding ground and accelerates your chances of getting spots.

Green People have recently launched a new Deep Cleansing Hand Foam which is rich in antibacterial actives and a great way to keep hands feeling fresh. This fluffy foam can be used without water when out and about or you can keep it by your sink and use it with water to create a pH-balanced hand wash that cleanses and cares for delicate skin.

3 Spot-Fighting Skin-Care Switches That Help Stop Maskne

Green People’s organic anti-blemish products contain skin-balancing plant actives that keep the complexion calm and clear without drying or irritating delicate skin. To stop spots from forming under your face mask, try these organic skin-care swaps:

PREVENT PIMPLES WITH PREBIOTICS

Using heavy, pore-clogging face creams beneath your mask can block your pores and increase your chances of acne. To avoid this, switch to a lightweight serum or a day cream that’s non-comedogenic and supports your skin’s supply of skin-balancing prebiotics.

Did you know? Prebiotics are essentially ‘food’ for probiotics, which help keep your skin healthy.

We recommend Green People’s Light Day Moisturiser which is enriched with potent prebiotics and willow bark, a natural, non-irritating alternative to salicylic acid.

CLEANSE TO DECONGEST

When you’re keeping make-up use to a minimum, it can be tempting to go to sleep without cleansing your skin. Don’t! This could cause dirt and pollutants linger on your skin, giving spots a chance to form whilst you sleep.

Cleansing twice a day with a spot-fighting cleanser is the best way to keep skin clear and we recommend using a foam cleanser such as Green People’s Foaming Face Wash. This gentle facial wash contains spot-fighting witch hazel and gently cleanses trapped dirt from the pores. It is also free from SLS and skin-drying alcohols so won’t irritate skin that’s feeling sore or delicate.

PURIFY YOUR PORES

A weekly detox face mask is another great way to naturally balance oily skin and draw toxins out of the pores. One of our go-to masks is Green People’s Coconut Charcoal Purifying Face Mask. This deep-cleansing face mask doesn’t feel tight on the skin and contains alpine willow to bring balance to oil levels.
