Heatwave Skin Survival

Love the sun but feel your skin getting drier and pinker by the minute? From sun damage, to air-conditioning causing conditions like eczema and psoriasis to flare-up, heatwaves can play havoc with your skin.

So, how can you keep your skin healthy, hydrated and protected in the heat? Here’s Team Gorgeous’ top tips for heatwave skin survival.

Sun Protection

First thing’s first. Sun exposure is not your friend. While soaking up some vitamin D can work wonders, sun exposure without protection will leave your dermis damaged, causing premature ageing and leaving you at risk of cancer.

Regardless of whether you’re fair or dark skinned, you should be using sun protection. Damaging UVA rays can even penetrate glass, meaning that if you want to stay protected from harmful UV rays, you’ll need to wear sun protection from morning until night.

It’s important to note that sunscreen also needs time to form a shield against UV. Make sure you apply your chosen sun protection at least 20 minutes before you head out for the day, and keep it topped up. Most sunscreen is good for around two hours, before the skin uses up the active ingredients.

If you’re after a facial SPF but don’t want to give up your favourite tinted moisturiser, why not try Ultrasun Face Tinted SPF 50+? The lightweight formula provides heavy-duty sun protection, alongside a tint. It’s also boosted with Ectoin, a rare natural enzyme designed to reduce the effects of UVA damage and premature photo ageing.

Skin Hydration

With dermatologists agreeing that air-conditioning can impact on the skin’s hydration levels, conditons like eczema, psoriasis and rosacea can all flare-up when exposed to the office air-con.

Keeping skin hydrated will help to combat the dry and tight feeling that we’ve all experienced after a day under the office air-con. More than one of Team Gorgeous keep a hydrating mist on their desk. We love A’Kin’s Hydrating Mist Toner, the Trilogy Hydrating Mist Toner and Balance Me’s Hyaluronic Plumping Mist.

Adding an indulgent night time moisturiser will also help rehydrate your skin while you sleep. We love A’Kin’s Antioxidant Night Cream which protects skin from free radicals whilst hydrating with Coconut Water and vitamin E. ELEMIS Pro-Collagen Overnight Matrix is another great option, with 100% of users in independent trials agreeing their skin bounced back to life after using this product.

Damage Control

If the damage is done, and you found this post too late, don’t fear. These skin heroes will help treat dark spots and soothe sun-damaged skin. For banishing dark spots and boosting radiance, Team Gorgeous swear by Caudalie’s Concentrated Brightening Essence and Radiance Serum Complexion Correction. You can find out why here.

If we’ve slipped up on our sun protection, and our skin’s feeling a little on the pink side, we love NUXE Refreshing After-Sun Lotion for Face and Body. Incredibly soothing after sun exposure, the formula’s non-comedogenic and is suitable for face and body, meanign no need to double up!
