Green Beauty – What Can We Be Doing?

In light of the ban on microbeads earlier this year, we’re finding even more ways to be greener with our beauty choices.

Green Beauty

Green beauty spans a lot of categories and considerations, from natural exfoliators to products made from recyclable materials.

Here are a few little ways to make a big difference to your beauty buys.

Ditch the plastic water bottle

We all know drinking water is an easy way to give us happy, healthy skin. BKR water bottles are a stylish and surefire way to drink your daily eight glasses. Made from BPA-free, phthalate-free and FDA approved materials, BKR’s are also 100% recyclable.

Choose Natural Exfoliators

A big success for green beauty was the ban on Microbeads in January. Microbeads (usually polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) on ingredients lists) are tiny plastic particles that were commonly used in cosmetics. From toothpaste to scrubs, microbeads acted as an alternative to natural exfoliators. However unlike natural exfoliators, microbeads don’t dissolve or degrade. Consequently this lead to the pollution of rivers, lakes and also oceans, affecting marine life.

Long before the ban, many brands avoided using microbeads.  Using natural ingredients such as crushed nut kernel or shell and oat powder have been a popular natural alternatives.

Balance Me Radiance Face Mask 75ml uses ground walnut shell powder to act as a physical defoliant to buff away dry or dead skin.

Recycled products

As well as encouraging to recycle the product packaging, many brands make their packaging from recycled materials.

Pureology are committed to minimising the negative impact of their product’s life cycle. They make their packaging from 50% post-consumer recycled materials, while also being 100% recyclable. They even print their labels using soy ink. Pureology also strive for sustainability by reducing water use in their packaging.

Pureology’s packaging saves nearly 60,000 gallons of water per year!

Eco-friendly beauty

Eco-conscious brands like Natural Sea Sponge and Scottish Fine Soaps ensure their production doesn’t have a negative impact on the environment around them.

Natural Sea Sponge harvest their sponges in protected marine areas and therefore ensure they cut from the base of the sponge, to leave the roots to regrow. All the materials used in the packaging and processing are recyclable.

Scottish Fine Soaps create, design and package all their products in the Ochil Hills in Stirlingshire. They constantly strive to minimise energy consumption and, as a result they have been Environmental Management and Carbon Trust Certified since 2010.
