Essential oils have plentiful benefits - and that's why they’re at the heart of every DECLÉOR treatment. From lavender to green mandarin, discover which one(s) are right for your unique skin needs.

Essential oils are ‘potent power-packed ingredients’, says DECLÉOR’s Skincare Specialist Fiona Brackenbury – and they’ve been around for a long, long time.

Did you know? The use of essential oils can be traced back to Ancient Egypt, where they were an important component in the mummification process.

Every essential oil has ‘150 active molecules’ and shares our blood and lymph’s molecular structure. This allows the body to rapidly recognise and absorb it into the dermis, the skin’s deepest layer.

The effectiveness of skin treatments can therefore be boosted with a little help from essential oils as these ensure optimal delivery of all benefits onto the skin. It’s really no wonder essential oils are at the heart of every DECLÉOR product…

What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are concentrated extracts derived from plants’ roots, blossoms, leaves and fruits. They – essentially – capture the natural fragrance (or ‘essence’) of their sources.

Essential oils boast benefits and characteristics associated with their specific plant of origin. For example, peppermint oils have different properties from those of iris or sandalwood oils.

Remember: Essential oils cannot be directly applied onto the skin – they’re too concentrated so they need to be diluted first. A carrier oil (also known as a base oil) helps dilute an essential oil and safely ‘carry’ it onto the skin. If you purchase a pure essential oil, you’ll need to make sure to dilute it before applying it.

What Are the Best Essential Oils?

Everyone is different, and so is everyone’s skin. From dry and sensitive to oily and mature, there are many skin types. Each of these has a specific set of characteristics, determined by factors such as genetics and daily habits – and each of these demands special attention.

This is to say the best essential oils for your skin type might not be the same as someone else’s. While some essential oils might be great for dry skin, some might not. Let’s take a look:

> Sensitive Skin: Calming Rose Damascena Oil

Proven to strengthen the skin’s protective barrier, Damascena Rose essential oil is the perfect choice for people with more fragile, reactive skin. Whether your skin is sensitive due to stress, hormones or even pregnancy, this essential oil offers much-needed relief, reducing inflammation and redness while helping to build the skin’s tolerance. This oil is also a great option for people with rosacea or adult acne.

The ready-to-use DECLÉOR Organic Aromessence Rose D’Orient Comfort Oil Serum is powered by Damascena Rose to help stabilise, even and soothe irritable skin.

> Very Dry Skin: Nourishing Marjoram Oil

Having dry and very skin can be very uncomfortable. Given its affinity with skin fluids, Marjoram essential oil can penetrate deep into the dermis. This ingredient (which belongs to the mint family) promotes the production of more lipids to intensely nourish, lubricate and smooth the skin, offering an effective from-within treatment.

Marjoram Oil can be found in the DECLÉOR Aroma Svelt Body Refining Oil Serum and in the DECLÉOR Neroli Bigarade Cocoon Day Cream – two supercharged, moisturising formulas.

> Oily & Combination Skin: Deeply Cleansing Ylang Ylang Oil

Clinically proven to contribute to reducing the skin’s oil flow by about 20%, Ylang-Ylang essential oil is helpful for those suffering from acne and/or breakouts. The tropical-tree-derived ingredient limits surface oiliness and shine. It’s got antiseptic and antibacterial properties too, which deeply cleanse the skin.

> Ageing Skin: Youthful Green Mandarin Oil & Restful Lavender Oil

With the power to reduce and prevent the appearance of expression lines and wrinkles, Green Mandarin essential oil is just the thing for skin showing signs of ageing.

Professionally blended with citric essential oils, the youthfulness-reviving Mandarin Essential Oil from DECLÉOR hydrates the skin while repairing damage. Three drops a day of this miracle worker will give you an instant glow and boost of energy.

Lavender essential oil is a great choice for ageing skin too, helping to improve firmness and boost cell renewal while uplifting the mind. This is the star ingredient behind the nourishing DECLÉOR Lavander Fine Aromessence Serum.

> Dehydrated Skin: Hydrating Neroli Oil

Known for its moisturising benefits, Neroli essential oil is great for people with dehydrated skin, or people whose skin lacks lustre. This incredible oil is obtained from fresh flower buds of the bitter orange tree – one whole ton of flowers yields 500g of oil.

> Mature Skin: Re-shaping Magnolia Oil

Stimulating the production of collagen and fibrillin (responsible for giving elasticity to the skin), Magnolia essential oil is a wonderful option for more mature skin. It helps combat loss of contour, density and definition, acting like a ‘support mattress’.

Other #Gorgeous Essential Oils

There are many, many different types of essential oils. Some are great for specific types of skin (like the above) and some are great for targeting a specific issue or condition.

Iris essential oil, for example, increases the quality of the skin’s elastin fibers to improve the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Tea trea oil, on the other hand, has anti-bacterial properties and be used (together with a couple more ingredients) to create a hand sanitiser.
