Thinning hair can be caused by multiple factors (stress, genes, medication). Discover the 6 main causes for hair thinning and how best to improve the fullness and density of hair.

The 6 Causes for Hair Thinning

Hair thinning can be caused of multiple factors. From genetics, to feeling stressed at work, to postpartum shedding, hair thinning can affect many of us at different stages of our lives. Many of the causes for hair thinning can’t be avoided; however, once the cause is addressed there are ways to treat the scalp and hair to encourage the healthiest growth possible.

Healthy hair all starts with a healthy scalp. NIOXIN 3-part systems include a Cleanser (shampoo), Revitaliser (conditioner) and treatment to balance and improve the scalp environment to encourage healthy growth.

1. Genetic factors

For many, thinning hair is all down to genes. Inherited from either your mother or father, natural, age-related hormones can trigger an imbalance. This imbalance can be caused by testosterone evolving into the toxin Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This imbalance can weaken the hair follicle and therefore lead to hair thinning.

2. Stress & Trauma

Stress is one of the leading causes of thinning hair and hair loss. In fact, NIOXIN suggest that “two thirds of people cite stress as the number one reason for their hair’s lack of volume and thickness – ahead of age, hormonal changes, illness and medication.”*

Stress is our body’s response to dealing with physical or emotional experiences. Stress causes the body to release cortisol to give us an adrenalin kick for a ‘flight or fight’ reaction. Chronic stress can mean our bodies continuously produce these hormones and overwhelm the body, thus creating an imbalance interrupting the hair’s growth cycle.

Stress can also restrict blood flow, and in turn oxygen, to the hair follicles, which again interrupts the growth cycle and weakens the hair at the root.

3. Health Reasons

Hormones play a big part in our hair’s growth. Many women experience hair loss and shedding in pregnancy, through postpartum and in menopause. This can be down to the surge in oestrogen and progesterone hormones in pregnancy and a drop in these hormones through the menopausal stages.

Many women may also experience a thyroid imbalance after birth, which can also contribute to hair thinning.

4. Environmental Factors

Our environment can also have a negative impact on hair’s growth cycle. Pollution, chlorine and styling product can all build up on the scalp and can clog the follicle restricting growth. Healthy hair growth all starts with a healthy scalp. Daily cleansing with the right shampoo can ensure your scalp is clean and balanced to encourage healthy hair.

5. Medication Issues

The hair follicle is extremely sensitive to changes in our body, especially to changes in hormones through medication (including birth control). Many people who take medication for blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and acne experience changes to their hair growth.

6. Nutrition & Diet

Our diet can have a huge impact on our hair’s health. By not eating the right foods, we aren’t able to feed our hair with the right nutrition.

Foods rich in omega fatty acids and vitamin A, B and C all help to nourish and strengthen the hair. Foods that are high in processed sugar can lead to an increase in insulin levels and androgen, which can cause the follicle to shrink.

How Best to Treat Thinning Hair?

NIOXIN uses advanced technologies to deliver thicker, fuller, denser-looking hair. Their commitment to innovation, supported by research, enables men and women to combat thinning hair. The NIOXIN approach first began in 1987, when founder Eva Graham experienced thinning hair after the birth of her first child, and began to investigate the idea of treating the scalp with skincare methods.

From natural to colour-treated to chemically-treated hair, NIOXIN Systems are tailor to meet your hair needs to reveal thicker, fuller-feeling hair.
